More celebrities join Wall Street protests - TheCelebrityCafe.com

Last week actress Susan Sarandon joined New York protestors at Wall Street to learn more about the issues and why people were there and on Friday one more celebrity joined the cause.

Yahoo reported Gossip Girl actor Penn Badgley stopped by to lend his support to those protesting social inequality. He said he doesn't believe his presence should impact how much attention the protests receive, but admits that his fame helps.

"I mean, listen, it's cheesy. But I want to do whatever I can. Let's be honest: I'm on Gossip Girl... It's absurd that celebrity power is what it is, but, like, use any tool you have, you know?"

CBS News reported 13 Going on 30's Mark Ruffalo was at the rally Tuesday and that he's also posted news articles and comments on his Twitter account to continue showing his support.

Other celebrities that have shown support include Yoko Ono, Alec Baldwin, and Michael Moore.

Last month Lupe Fiasco encouraged protestors after donating tents and supplies. Talib Kweli gave an impromptu concert to the crowd, performing "Distraction" and "Thieves in the Night," and Russell Simmons handed out around 500 bottles of water.

Who do you think will be the next Hollywood staple to stop by?

Street Style: Fashion’s Night Out Edition

So you probably know that last night was Fashion’s Night Out. Hooray you survived! You shopped! You saw x celebrity! You listened to music! You drank some cheap champagne! You hopefully ate some free food with that cheap champagne!

No? You didn’t do these things? Well if you didn’t venture out for the third annual Fashion’s Night Out we asked our very own street style photog Ashley Jahncke to document what was arguably one of the evening’s hippest and most fashionable events: the Opening Ceremony “mercado de carnival” at the Ace hotel.

Fashion’s Night Out is Halloween for fashionistas and you can be sure the folks at Opening Ceremony’s fete–including Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Alexander Wang, the Proenza Schouler boys and Miss Piggy–were among the best dressed of the night.

Take a look.

Kim Kardashian Made $12,600 On eBay As A Teenager, Coco Rocha’s Cool With High Street Copies and More from Lucky’s FABB Event

Photo: Getty

Lucky hosted its second Fashion and Beauty Bloggers conference yesterday in NYC, rounding up serious star power into discussion panels moderated by the mag’s editors.

Designers Diane von Furstenberg, Rebecca Minkoff, and Rachel Roy were among the speakers, as were nail polish guru Essie Weingarten, Man Repeller Leandra Medine, and Rachel Zoe’s other half Rodger Berman.

Oh, and the Kardashian sisters, the magazine’s mildly famous October cover girls, who arrived with an E! camera crew and dozens of printed release forms in tow. Without further ado, some of our favorite takeaways from the day:

The Kardashians really do behave like their on-screen personalities. Khloe tacked on “work it baby!” and other outlandish comments to her sisters’ answers, making the crowd laugh whenever possible. Also like her TV persona, Khloe was the most candid and forthright, saying she loves accessories the most out of everything in her closet, because “no matter what weight [she goes] go up to”, her “bags and shoes always fit”. Amen.

Kim Kardashian is a former eBay queen. But she wasn’t just spending dad’s money on auctions; instead, she was raking in cash by selling hard-to-find items at a hefty premium, like those Manolo Blahnik x Timberland boots (remember them?). After begging her dad to loan her the necessary cash to buy out a store’s remaining supply of the iconic shoe, she sold all seven pairs, originally $700, for $2500 each. Which means she was able to pay back that loan–and the 10% interest her dad charged after 30 days– in spades.

Diane von Furstenberg’s advice for a successful, happy life? Have children. While Diane’s first piece of advice was that the “most important relationship you have is with yourself,” her next piece of advice was that “all women should have children”. “That’s number two,” she said. Diane’s imperative might not be as universally appealing as her wrap dresses, but hey, the woman’s got a pronounced point of view, and we respect her candor.

Coco Rocha supports designer knockoffs. “Thank god for H&M, Macy’s, Zara, ” said the supermodel, arguing for mass market brands copying designer goods, since it makes high fashion concepts affordable . “Copying is the highest form of flattery,” she shrugged. We bet some of Rocha’s employers don’t share the same nonchalance– like the Proenza Schouler boys, who find copyright infringement more harmful to business than, say, flattering.

Apart from surprising sound bites, all the panelists had some very real advice to offer to the bloggers in the audience. Almost everyone (even the Kardashians) stressed the importance of being “authentic”, as well as parsing out a specific, niche voice behind a blog to make it stand out. All in all, Lucky‘s panels teemed with seriously inspiring, motivational stories. And no, not just on how and why to revisit your ebay account–although, yes, that too. Thanks Kim.

How I’m Making It: Street Style Photographer Mr. Newton

Whether you’re ready or not, NYFW SS12 is upon us. In the spirit of fashion week, we’re bringing you a special interview with one of our favorite street style photographers, Mr. Newton.

With a client list that includes Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Lucky, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Nylon, Elle UK, and every other publication you love to read, Mr. Newton has proven that he’s more than some cool dude with a blog – he’s a major force in on-the-street photography.

We could give you quite a few reasons why this is so, from his unique perspective on fashion to his charming southern drawl, but we’d rather let Mr. Newton speak for himself.

Fashionista: Where are you from and how did you get started as a photographer?
Mr. Newton: I’m from Fayetteville, North Carolina. I’ve been here [in NYC] for 13 years. I started out shooting parties with cool kids. I also was DJ’ing runway shows at this point. It’s always hours before the show starts, so I started shooting the girls backstage. When I started shooting street style, I’m proud to say, I had never heard of the Sartorialist or anyone else. Then in 2007, a friend showed some of my photos to Frank Bober, the CEO at Stylesight. He ended up hiring me to do their street style blog–Stylesightings–or the next two years. In mid-2009 I struck out on my own and started Mr. Newton.

How do you choose the girls you’re going to shoot?
I always shoot girls that I personally like, that I think look cool, and fun, and have attitude. You can totally tell–by the way they walk, the way they smile, you can really pick up on their energy. I don’t aspire to be Terry Richardson, but I don’t aspire to be just a bland shopping site either. I like girls that dress a little sexy and have attitude, and aren’t afraid to work it.

So next question: Why don’t you shoot guys? Or as I wrote in my notebook, “Why no dudes?”
Because I like to shoot what excites me, and dude fashion does not excite me. I think of women as these wonderful and mysterious creatures, and I think of guys as just sweaty dudes! There’s also not as much of a market for it, not so many clients looking to buy dude photos. Also I think there’s a lot more going on with female fashion, head-to-toe. I think guys who dress well pretty much have a uniform for life, and women wear something a couple of times, and they’re done. Every month you’ve got different stuff to shoot with women.

So who’s your ideal muse, or your ideal subject to shoot?
The coolest It-girls worldwide…bloggers, stylists, up-and-coming models…girls like Daisy Lowe, Elena Perminova, Liz Cherkasova, Elisa Nalin… I love a lot of girls whose names I don’t even know. I shoot a lot of girls in foreign countries that don’t speak English. I really like that mysterious quality about street style. Like Diane Arbus–she would see a couple on a park bench and the title of the photo would be “Couple on Park Bench in Washington Square.” She didn’t know their names. She didn’t contact them via Twitter. [laughs]

You Can Turn Tricks on Sesame Street In These Slutty Cookie Monster and Elmo Halloween Costumes

Remember those blissful Saturday mornings of your youth when you would plunk down with a good bowl of cereal, switch on the tube and spend hours watching Sesame Street, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Power Rangers? Yeah, TV Store Online has pretty much ruined all those memories for us.

Enter their “Sexy Tank Dress” costume collection, which includes slutty Halloween getups inspired by beloved children’s TV shows–because really, who hasn’t wished that Cookie Monster would show a little more skin? Or that the Power Rangers would ditch their jumpsuits for skimpier outfits?

Besides stamping on our childhood memories, the tank dress costumes are completely unoriginal and silly…and don’t even get us started on the models’ poses! Why is the Pink Ranger on all fours? What is the Yellow Ranger even doing? My god. Oscar the Grouch would so disapprove.

Actually, the sad fact is that we just know we’re going to see these come Halloween this year. Sigh.

Click through to see the TV Store’s slutty take on The Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
