Street Style: Fashion’s Night Out Edition

So you probably know that last night was Fashion’s Night Out. Hooray you survived! You shopped! You saw x celebrity! You listened to music! You drank some cheap champagne! You hopefully ate some free food with that cheap champagne!

No? You didn’t do these things? Well if you didn’t venture out for the third annual Fashion’s Night Out we asked our very own street style photog Ashley Jahncke to document what was arguably one of the evening’s hippest and most fashionable events: the Opening Ceremony “mercado de carnival” at the Ace hotel.

Fashion’s Night Out is Halloween for fashionistas and you can be sure the folks at Opening Ceremony’s fete–including Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Alexander Wang, the Proenza Schouler boys and Miss Piggy–were among the best dressed of the night.

Take a look.

Fashion News Roundup: Mark Ronson Weds Josephine de la Baume in Style, Scarlett Johansson Channels Bardot, and Anne Hathaway Stuns in New Tod’s Campaign

Kim Who?: Mark Ronson wed Josephine de la Baume this weekend and, unsurprisingly, the duo–clad in a red pinstripe suit and cleavage-baring white gown (respectively)–look unbelievably fashionable. {PopSugar}

Paying Tribute or Shilling Champagne? Scarlett Johansson channels Brigitte Bardot in a Lulu Gainsbourg video for dad Serge Gainsbourg’s song “Bonnie & Clyde,” which features a gorgeous Johansson writhing around in what looks like a bed sheet and drinking champagne–and even features the young starlet’s vocals instead of Bardot’s. While the video is ostensibly a tribute to Gainsbourg, we think it looks a whole lot like an ad for Moet Chandon champagne, for which Johansson is also a spokesperson. {Huffington Post}

Something Is Really Off About Stella Tennant in Vogue Italia: See all the images from Vogue Italia‘s Ethel Granger-inspired shoot. Frightening. {Fashion Gone Rogue}

Wanna Cyber? Luxury brands are going to new lengths–like 3D e-stores and Facebook retail apps–to engage the online world. {New York Times}

Mark Your Calendars! Zara’s e-commerce site opens tomorrow! {Elle}

Bag It: Anne Hathaway looks stunning in new ad campaign for Tod’s shot by Mert & Marcus. {People Style Watch}

How I’m Making It: Street Style Photographer Mr. Newton

Whether you’re ready or not, NYFW SS12 is upon us. In the spirit of fashion week, we’re bringing you a special interview with one of our favorite street style photographers, Mr. Newton.

With a client list that includes Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Lucky, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Nylon, Elle UK, and every other publication you love to read, Mr. Newton has proven that he’s more than some cool dude with a blog – he’s a major force in on-the-street photography.

We could give you quite a few reasons why this is so, from his unique perspective on fashion to his charming southern drawl, but we’d rather let Mr. Newton speak for himself.

Fashionista: Where are you from and how did you get started as a photographer?
Mr. Newton: I’m from Fayetteville, North Carolina. I’ve been here [in NYC] for 13 years. I started out shooting parties with cool kids. I also was DJ’ing runway shows at this point. It’s always hours before the show starts, so I started shooting the girls backstage. When I started shooting street style, I’m proud to say, I had never heard of the Sartorialist or anyone else. Then in 2007, a friend showed some of my photos to Frank Bober, the CEO at Stylesight. He ended up hiring me to do their street style blog–Stylesightings–or the next two years. In mid-2009 I struck out on my own and started Mr. Newton.

How do you choose the girls you’re going to shoot?
I always shoot girls that I personally like, that I think look cool, and fun, and have attitude. You can totally tell–by the way they walk, the way they smile, you can really pick up on their energy. I don’t aspire to be Terry Richardson, but I don’t aspire to be just a bland shopping site either. I like girls that dress a little sexy and have attitude, and aren’t afraid to work it.

So next question: Why don’t you shoot guys? Or as I wrote in my notebook, “Why no dudes?”
Because I like to shoot what excites me, and dude fashion does not excite me. I think of women as these wonderful and mysterious creatures, and I think of guys as just sweaty dudes! There’s also not as much of a market for it, not so many clients looking to buy dude photos. Also I think there’s a lot more going on with female fashion, head-to-toe. I think guys who dress well pretty much have a uniform for life, and women wear something a couple of times, and they’re done. Every month you’ve got different stuff to shoot with women.

So who’s your ideal muse, or your ideal subject to shoot?
The coolest It-girls worldwide…bloggers, stylists, up-and-coming models…girls like Daisy Lowe, Elena Perminova, Liz Cherkasova, Elisa Nalin… I love a lot of girls whose names I don’t even know. I shoot a lot of girls in foreign countries that don’t speak English. I really like that mysterious quality about street style. Like Diane Arbus–she would see a couple on a park bench and the title of the photo would be “Couple on Park Bench in Washington Square.” She didn’t know their names. She didn’t contact them via Twitter. [laughs]

More Stunning Photos of Frances Bean Emerge, Is She Destined to Become a Style Icon?

Photo: Rocky Schenck

Until very recently, we didn’t know much about Frances Bean Cobain other than that she just turned 19 and is the daughter of Courtney Love and the late Kurt Cobain. Now, we also know that she’s gorgeous, thanks to two sets of sultry photos that have recently hit the internet.

Hedi Slimane‘s were the first to catch our attention. The black and white photos, which show Frances Bean covered in tattoos and smoking, are haunting and intense and shed a new light on the famous offspring. The fashion world was particularly dazzled by the photos and she’s already being called an ‘it girl.’ Her mother told the Observer, of a recent Times article, “Ugh, I didn’t like how they called her an ‘It Girl.’ It’s tacky. It’s not like she’s gonna do Nylon.”

Just before Frances’ 19th birthday, another set of photographs emerged by fine art photographer Rocky Schenck–these ones more romantic and old Hollywood and less rock and roll than Hedi’s, but equally beautiful.

Both photographers said the photos were taken at Cobain’s request, which is interesting. Does she just admire the work of these particular photographers or does she want photos of herself out there for a particular reason? As far as we know, she hasn’t shown interest in anything other than her own art, so the former seems more likely than any quest for fame.

Frances is obviously having a moment, but will it last? It’s hard not to be obsessed with someone like Frances now, whose parents were icons of the grunge era that has been informing fashion trends so much lately. But is she, herself, an icon? Is it just in her DNA? Is she destined to be the next Chanel ambassadress? It’s a lot to base on a few photos, but given all the attention they’ve received, the opportunity is definitely there for her. See below for all the photos.

Style Startups is looking for Research and Editorial Interns!

Style Startups is looking for ‘Fashion 2.0' editorial and research interns to help explore the exploding world of web-based fashion technology.

Style Startups will be launching late this fall, and will be a platform for tracking and exploring all types of ‘Fashion 2.0' business ventures (think flash sale sites like Gilt Groupe and social shopping like Fashism and subscription sites like Shoe Dazzle). They’ll also be educating existing companies and mentoring new entrepreneurs. They are currently looking for interns so nice, smart, and amazing, they’re never going to want to let them go.

This is a great fit for those fashion geeks out there – you must love fashion and have a deep interest in technology as well (social media savvy, of course, but more, too… disruptive new online business models, 3D accessory printing, whatever geeks you out).

Responsibilities include:
Research – combing the web for new and existing fashion websites and entering them into a database. (Yes, that means looking at fashion sites all day!)
Blogging – writing about new and interesting fashion 2.0 things that you discover as you comb the web.
Social media – some pr + marketing work using all the usual social media channels.

This is a great fit for interns who:
-have a deep love for fashion
-are smart about technology
-have clear, articulate, thoughtful writing
-can write in a certain voice (smart, authoritative, fun)
-are a self-starter – there is a great deal of autonomy in this job
-are detail oriented, but also…
-are a big picture thinker
-have the ability to do focused data entry
-have their own computer, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet place to get work done
-work well as a team member, and also independently
-are super amazingly nice
-have a vibrant energy
-have good taste
-posses the ability to produce consistent good work
-are a terrifically quick learner

Bonus points if you:
-live in or have easy access to NYC
-have amazing public speaking skills
-have deep knowledge of fashion history and trends
-already have knowledge of online tools (google docs, co-tweet, administrative back ends of websites, etc)

This is an unpaid internship that you can get college credit for. Hours will be set, but are flexible, so you can work another job. We’re looking for 15 hours a week of commitment. This absolutely has the possibility to turn into paid work at the end of the internship if you kick major ass. We are a startup founded by someone with previous successful internet startup experience, so there’s great ability for growth for the right candidates. Where you work from will be flexible; you can be in the NYC area or could work virtually as well.

To apply, send your resume, available starting date, and at least three writing samples, (with bonus for a link to your online presence and / or an application video) to stylestartups@gmail.com. Resumes and writing samples with be accepted in PDF or url format only. In the subject line, put three words that your friends would use to describe you.

In summary:
Start date: flexible
Commitment: 15 hours per week, duration flexible
Internship: unpaid, college credit available
Location: flexible
