Vanessa Hudgens: US Open Tennis Time

Posted Tuesday September 6, 2011 8:08 AM GMT

Making the most of the Labor Day holiday, Vanessa Hudgens was spotted at the 2011 US Open in New York City yesterday (September 5).

The “Sucker Punch” cutie sat in her primo seats, just in front of Jason Sudeikis at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and sipped champagne from a Moet glass.

And Vanessa was proud to show off her newly lengthened coif thanks to some hair extensions, a sharp contrast to her “Gimme Shelter” hairdo.

Prior to the change, Hudgens lamented, “Honestly, I kind of feel a bit like a soccer mom, but we're going to let that go. There's nothing wrong with soccer moms, but I'm only 22! I miss my hair believe me, I do. But there's nothing I can do about it.”

In Honor of the US Open, Here’s a Look Back at Fashion’s Love Affair with Tennis

Photo: Getty

Ever since the US Open began Monday, something very funny has been happening over at WWD. The industry newspaper–dedicated to reporting the comings and goings of the fashion and beauty world–has been talking grand slams and sports stats.

We’ve been noticing tennis-related posts popping up on all sorts of fashion-related sites. In the past few days, NY Times has run a piece dissecting female players’ hairstyles, WWD has reported on Ryan Harrison’s “brat attack”, NOWNESS premiered a dramatic, smoke-filled video starring tennis A-listers taking swings, and Vogue has run several tennis-themed features including a profile on the sports’ newest stars and a look at Maria Sharapova’s fashion cred.

Yes, some of these have been legitimately fashion-related, but it’s still a whole lot more industry buzz than has been given to other sports (Can you imagine a football-related headline on WWD!?)

Let’s take a look at the evolution of the fashion industry’s love affair with tennis.

The Inevitable KKK-Related Kardashian Gaffe: The only time it isn’t funny to change C’s to K’s in Kardashian mentions is when it ends up sounding like a Klu Klux Klan reference. This is exactly what happened in a Kardashian Kollection press release, which apparently read, “Join the stylish Kardashian klan on September 6th at the private studio of the legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz for an exclusive preview of their fabulous new fashion Kollection for Sears.” 1) Not ok. 2) Can we go to this? {New York Observer}

JC Penney’s Anti-feminist Message: JC Penney is was selling a shirt for young girls that reads, in a cutesy, colorful font, “I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me.” The caption next to it reads, “”Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out? She’ll love this tee that’s just as cute and sassy as she is.” Yes, we’re serious! The shirt has thankfully been taken off JC Penney’s site since we started writing this. {The Hairpin}

Karl for Macy’s Hits Stores: Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s hit stores today! As usual, Racked was on the front lines a.k.a. Macy’s Herald Square a.k.a. Coco Rochaland, apparently. Shoppers were snatching it up fast, but sales people said they had plenty in stock. {Racked}

Tennis Fans Cheer for Anna: Tennis fan Anna Wintour attended the US Open Monday with her daughter Bee and Roger Federer’s wife. Apparently, the whole crowd cheered when her picture went up on the Jumbotron. {Page Six}
