Designer Uniforms: Here Are 10 Designers Who Always Wear the Same Thing

One of the most interesting things, to me, about fashion designers is that their personal style often has no connection whatsoever to the clothes they design. The clothes they send down a runway each season may cover a wide range of styles and influences, but when the designer comes out for his or her requisite wave and/or bow at the end, they’re often wearing the same thing they wore the season before. Perhaps all of their creative energy is wrapped up in their work, so there’s nothing left to come up with a different outfit for themselves each day. Or, like the Mulleavys, maybe they’ve become detached from their work.

Whatever it is, there is a trend among designers of picking a certain look and sticking to it. Here are 10 who have done it to an extreme–some for a few months and some for entire decades. And remember Tina Fey’s advice: “A wise friend once told me,‘Don’t wear what fashion designers tell you to wear. Wear what they wear.’ His point being that most designers, no matter what they throw onto the runway, favor simple, flattering pieces for themselves.” It’s true!

Report: Kanye West Will Show in Paris October 1, Riccardo Tisci Rumored to be Involved and a Young British Ghost Designer? (Updated)

Photo: Getty

This sounds legit. Kanye West will show a spring 2012 womenswear collection in Paris at 9:30pm on October 1, directly after Jean Paul Gauliter and Loewe, on a runway, Harper’s Bazaar Australia reports. (They have a bit of an inside source: HB Australia fashion editor Christine Centenera (who is also a freelance stylist) had reportedly been traveling to Paris twice monthly and consulting West on his clothing line since March.)

We were getting more inclined to believe the rumors that a Kanye West fashion show was set to take place in Paris. One indicator has been the fact that he’s been totally absent from the New York shows.

The rumors started in June, got a little confusing as to where West would show, and then became a bit more firm via a confident-sounding tweet from Models.com’s Wayne Sterling last week: ”Hiss hiss. Which ultra-power stylist is now playing in Kayne’s [sic] camp for his blue chip Paris showing. And it IS a Paris showing kids!”

That’s the other component people keep buzzing about: who exactly is helping Kanye, who has no design training or real experience (unless you count those scarves for M/M), pull this off? Or rather, who isn’t? Here’s a quick rundown of all the fashion people he’s been tied to since all these “Kanye West clothing line” rumors began:

Phoebe Philo
British designer Louise Goldin
Central Saint Martins‘ head of MA fashion, Louise Wilson (this one was actually confirmed)
A.P.C. founder Jean Touitou
Giuseppe Zanotti
Harper’s Bazaar Australia fashion editor and stylist Christine Centenera (sort of confirmed)

Now, Page Six is reporting that West has tapped Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, who designed the album art for Watch the Throne, as a mentor. However, our own sources say it’s ‘a bright london kid doing the collection’. Hmm.

Is there room for all these fashion insiders to play a role in just one collection (that will have Kanye’s name on it). If so, this could either end up being really good or really strange. What do you think?

Ten Things We Learned from Bieber’s WWD Interview (Hint: He Wants to be a Designer)

*Photo: WWD

OK, we’ll admit that we don’t actually know all that much about Justin Bieber, so we have a long way to go. Luckily WWD got a great interview with the Biebs during his appearance at the Dolce & Gabbana store on Fashion’s Night Out last night. (Lucky them. We waited in a throng of screeching, sobbing, pushing tweens, many of whom had much nicer handbags than us–only to be denied a Biebs sighting. Anyway.)

Here’s what we learned about his personal life, his design ambitions (of course he wants to design), and his matrimonial desires:

1) He likes to eat Swedish Fish in the green room. (This is our favorite candy, too!)

2) He thinks music is more powerful than fashion.

3) He wants to start a clothing or shoe line, but has nothing in the works right now.

4) He aspires to be like Kanye West or Usher style-wise. (Do we smell a collab??)

5) Usher introduced him to the pleasures of Fendi and Louis Vuitton accessories.

6) He does not think he’s more influential than Barack Obama or the Dalai Lama (as determined by online influence-o-meter, Klout.)

7) He is a “normal 17-year-old” because he plays a lot of sports.

8) He didn’t have a lot of money growing up, which is why most of his ventures have a charitable component. (Ten percent of the profits from FNO sales of Dolce & Gabbana’s Passion Duo lipstick went towards Pencils of Promise, his pet charity.)

9) Selena Gomez is a) amazing and b) his girlfriend.

10) On marriage: “Well, by 25 or 26, I want to see myself, like, married or start looking for a family. I want to be a young dad. I want to be able to have done what I wanted to do — to be successful, to do a movie or whatever. But if the time is right, I definitely want to be married by 25. One thing — I’m not looking to get married now.”

The hearts of many a hopeful 14-year-old are breaking right now.

Lady Gaga’s Little Sister Becomes Off-Broadway Designer

Natali Germanotta – otherwise known as Lady Gaga’s younger sister – has been tipped to create costumes for Simon Says, a new off-Broadway show opening in The Big Apple later this year.

Affectionately known as “Baby Gaga” by “Little Monsters, Natali has been on the radar since appearing as an inmate in Big Sis’ “Telephone” music video and attending the CFDAs (aka The Fashion Oscars) to see Gaga accept the “Fashion Icon” Award.

So how did Natali go from just other famous person’s sister to landing a design job? Well, as a student at the Sacred Heart School in Manhattan, the 19-year-old interned for New York-designer Allison Parris and pitched her costume ideas backstage at the designer’s Autumn/Winter 2010-11 show.

“Natali has an edgier sense of style like her sister. Initially when she went to the Grammys a few years ago, she wore one of our little lace trapeze dresses, but she styled it up with leather and hardware. She is so nice and so easy to work with. She is such a great girl,” Allison told Women’s Wear Daily.

Considering Lady G has Thierry Mugler and designers Giorgio Armani and Nicola Formichetti on speed-dial, we’re expecting big things of Natali!

Exclusive: Jours Après Lunes Designer Sophie Morin Responds To the Controversy Surrounding Her Lingerie Line for Girls

PARIS–Our article, published earlier this week, about French children’s underwear line ‘Jour après Lunes’–a line comprised of lingerie–inspired pieces meant to be worn indoors and out, over and under clothes–led to far more reactions than we had imagined–including stories in major outlets like the New York Daily News, the UK’s Daily Mail, and TODAY.com.

The brand’s founder and designer Sophie Morin wrote a letter to Fashionista explaining why she doesn’t think her brand promotes anything dodgy or creepy.

Her main points:

The “ worn dessus-dessous” (i.e. underwear worn as outerwear) that has raised an upheaval, is in fact just another way of saying that, for example, an undershirt, worn under a sweater to be warm in the winter, can be worn with jeans in the summer; or bodysuits, often worn by babies, can become an outfit–like mothers often do with their babies when it is hot…Triangle bras–and there are only two models in the collection–are worn as swimwear for youngest clients; these can be worn as a first brassiere for girls and even young women who aren’t looking for real support, since these don’t have underwire. There are no real bras in my collection. The transgenerational mother/daughter aspect of my brand doesn’t offer anything new and is identical to what lots of ready to wear brands offer.

And about the photos of my brand, I’d like to specify that the articles in which they appeared were taken out of their context and were laid out to imply a sexy dimension that didn’t originally exist. All the photos show children playing children’s games, as we’ve all done. If you look at the details, you’ll often find elements of children’s games: dolls accessories, wooden animals, etc. A second reading is needed–no vulgar connotation. There is only one interpretation: children playing together, no more…The children aren’t wearing high heels nor nail polish nor lipstick. The hairdos are over the top, but so are children’s games. Yes, the models wear sunglasses, like every single kid. Yes, you see their stomachs and legs, like you do on the beach. Yes they wear necklaces inside the house, as do all little girls for fun. And finally, all the girls are professionals models and not Lolitas trying on women’s outfits. The direction of the photos is nothing weird, it is one frequently used by brands and magazines’ photo shoots.

I am extremely surprised by the current uproar around my brand, and am happy to answer any questions. I’d first like to say that my brand has nothing to do with the photos of Veronika Loubry’s daughter in Vogue, the confusion made by the press is totally wrong.
