New York's Legendary Hotel Chelsea To Close Its Doors

hotel-chelsea-new-york-to-close.jpg

So long, Hotel Chelsea.

The legendary New York hotel is closing its doors after being in business for over 100 years.

The 100 sq. foot hotel was the place where Sid Vicious stabbed his girlfriend Nancy in room 100. It's where Jack Kerouac wrote On The Road and Leonard Cohen had an affair with Janis Joplin. The hotel was home to Madonna in the early 1980s when she was just getting her start and to Dee Dee Ramone when he spent two weeks holed up in one of the rooms to kick his drug habit. Moments after finally emerging from his room, a woman landed just outside the hotel entrance where she threw herself off of the ninth floor just feet away from him.

It's a historic and legendary hotel and now it will be closing after new owners bought the property to tear it down.

Writer Ed Hamilton, who has lived in the hotel for 16 years with his wife says:

"It’s an endless source of inspiration because there’s such a weird bunch of characters here. They’re always doing something crazy."

And now he's forced to leave, along with the memories and stories that Hotel Chelsea provided.

Big time sadsies. Wish there was some way to save it.
