Angelina Jolie and William Hague visit Congo on anti-rape mission

The Hollywood actress and British Foreign Secretary visit a refugee camp in the Democratic Republic of Comgo as part of campaign to stop rape being used as a tool of war. 560 315 TelegraphPlayer_9953649 10:26PM GMT 25 Mar 2013

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, a special envoy for the UN refugee agency, travelled to the Nzulo camp near Goma on Monday along with Foreign Secretary William Hague.

The visit to the Nzolo IDP camp north of Goma, was intended to highlight the use of rape in conflict zones, and to raise awareness of the issue on an international level.

"What we're here to do is try to scale it up and make this a world wide focus and it's due time, it's been going on every war, every crisis and it's often an afterthought and it's due time to end this and put an end to impunity and they deserve it," Jolie said.

Mr Hague said that he planned to raise the problem at the annual G8 meeting of foreign ministers in London in April.

"Sexual violence in conflict has to be resolved if conflicts are to be resolved because when rape is used as a weapon of war, it makes communities harder, to bring together and much harder for people to get on with their lives afterwards," he said.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) says it's provided care to more than 2,500 women and girls who have been raped or abused over the last year alone.

The IRC is handing out kits with flashlights and whistles, as well as cleaning products so that women can avoid bathing at creeks where the risk of assault is higher.

Sexual violence is frequently used as a weapon of war by rebel groups that operate in eastern Congo, as well as by Congolese soldiers.

A somewhat unlikely duo, the Foreign Secretary and the actress launched the campaign in May 2012 to prevent sexual violence in conflict zones.

Angelina Jolie Covers Vanity Fair October 2011

Posted Tuesday August 30, 2011 7:46 AM GMT

Adding another magazine cover to her credit, Angelina Jolie is on the front of Vanity Fair's October 2011 issue.

The “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” actress gets real about her crazy life and constantly evolving career in the accompanying interview.

When asked about plans for the future, Jolie simply stated, “No secret wedding...I’m not pregnant. I’m not adopting at the moment.”

As for her partner Brad Pitt’s role in helping her professionally, she shared, “He’s been so supportive. But it’s hard to separate the person that loves you from the critic, so I don’t think he’s a fair judge.”

And Angelina also noted that writing/directing her flick “In the Land of Blood and Honey” may have made her even more jaded from future directors. “Brad thinks I’m going to be a nightmare…I had such a good experience he thinks I’m going to be impatient with directors, which I already am.”

Angelina Jolie's Zaika Dinner Outing in London

Posted Friday August 26, 2011 6:02 PM GMT

Drawing an end to the week, Angelina Jolie was spotted leaving the Dorchester hotel in London, England on Friday evening (August 26).

Dressed in her usual all-black garb, the "Wanted" actress was joined by a friend as the two headed to Zaika Restaurant on Kensington High Street for a bite to eat.

The outing comes just after Miss Jolie attended the International Criminal Court's landmark first trial in The Hague, Netherlands.

The 36-year-old actress watched on during the trial of Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga, who is facing charges of using child soldiers during his country's civil conflict.

Of the event, Ang told the Associated Press, "This is an extraordinary moment for international justice but more than that for children of the world."

She added, "It is quite striking to have a prosecutor from [the post-World War II Nuremberg trials] here today. You see his clarity, his wisdom, his strength and his compassion for this situation which he has witnessed over the years and now he's here to plead on behalf of these children in particular."

Niche Fragrances, Including Angelina Jolie’s Scent, Get the Spotlight at the Elements Showcase

With so many celebrities rolling out fragrances and so many millions of consumers buying them, it’s easy to forget that creating a scent is actually an art form. It takes talent, skill, and inventiveness.

I was reminded of this fact earlier this week at Elements Showcase where an impressive collection of niche fragrance brands came together to present their diverse products. The bi-annual showcase that first premiered last January, is the vision of Jeff Lawson, owner of an events consultancy, Ulrich Lang, a former L’Oreal exec, and Frederick Bouchardy, founder of Joya, a creative collective specializing in fragrance.

The goal of the event was to connect fragrance designers with the media and buyers from top distributors like Barney’s and Henri Bendel, while at the same time, highlighting the artistry and craftsmanship of the exhibitors’ products.

At the event, held in midtown’s Skylight Studios, Bouchardy and Lawson were excited to inform me that due to the success of the first Showcase, they were able to double the size, and feature twice the exhibitors this time around. The impressive lineup included Bond No. 9, C.O. Bigelow, Juliette Has A Gun, Odin, and Robert Piguet.

I must admit, upon walking into the Showcase, I was unsure how exactly one defines a “niche fragrance.” My perfume knowledge is limited to the womens fragrance wall at Sephora. My signature scent is Chloé Eau de Parfum–the same as I imagine thousands of other girls in New York City alone. I learned that niche fragrances differ from the mainstream brands because of their select distribution and unique and innovative scents.

Founders Ulrich Lang, Frederick Bouchardy, and Jeff Lawson

Traveling around to the different booths was an enlightening and an overall great smelling experience. One of the most intriguing products I sampled was Histoire de Parfums‘ 1969. I was told that it’s Angelina Jolie‘s favorite perfume. After taking a whiff, it was clear as to why. The fragrance features notes of chocolate, coffee, and musk. Somehow all of the notes work together to create an intense, yet intoxifying scent that only someone as bad ass as Jolie can pull off.

Juliette Has A Gun‘s (created by Romano Ricci, the great-grandson of Nina Ricci) offerings also stood out. One of the brand’s products, Not a Perfume, comes to life on the skin–literally. The scent can barely be detected on paper. Skin triggers the scent to grow in intensity. This effect is achieved by the product’s sole ingredient–Cetalox.

Bond No. 9 was one of the few exhibitors that I had heard of before so I had to stop by and see what’s next for the brand. I Love New York by Bond No. 9 is their latest collection of 15 different scents that will launch in series beginning this September. The line, like the I Love New York t-shirts, will feature easy to wear scents and will even be offered at a lower than usual price point. As always, the bottles, which come in hot pink, black, and an electric blue with the I Love NY logo emblazoned across the front are ones that you’ll want to display even when the fragrance runs out.

Not only am I now excited to expand my fragrance horizons and find a new, unique, signature scent, but I also can’t wait to see what Elements has in store for next time. I do know that they’ve partnered with the Fragrance Foundation to create the new “Indie” FiFi Award, a category that brands are able to enter themselves. The first ever winner of the award will be announced at the next showcase in January 2012, so stay tuned!

Angelina Jolie's Glasgow Playtime with the Twins

Posted Friday August 19, 2011 9:00 AM GMT

Making the most of the beautiful weather, Angelina Jolie was spotted out and about in Glasgow, Scotland today (August 19).

The “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” actress meandered around a nature preserve with her children, getting some fresh air and sunshine while partner Brad Pitt was away working on his new film “World War Z.”

In related news, the man who famously wrote an erroneous story for News of the World about an alleged breakup between Angelina and Brad back in 2010, was arrested yesterday for a phone hacking scandal.

James Desborough of News Corp will face charges of conspiring to intercept communications and may even get some jail time.

Angelina Jolie Hangs with the Twins as Papa Pitt Works

Posted Thursday August 18, 2011 8:57 AM GMT

Playing the role of the doting mother, Angelina Jolie was spotted out with her kids at their rented country property Carnell Estate today (August 18).

The “Changeling” chick and her brood of children looked to be enjoying themselves as they explored the Glasgow, Scotland locale.

Meanwhile, papa Brad Pitt was hard at work on his current film “World War Z” in downtown Glasgow, chatting with his attractive female assistant in between takes.

In related news, the recent Life & Style report that Angelina is “at the breaking point” and “weighs 110 pounds at most” is totally false. Gossip Cop reports that Jolie and the kids are happy and healthy while traveling abroad.

Enjoy the pictures of Angelina Jolie and twins at Carnell Estate while Brad Pitt worked on the "World War Z" set (August 18).
