Fashion Week Diary: We Spend a Morning with Peter Som as He Preps for His Show

What, exactly, do designers go through just days before their runway shows? We decided to spend the morning with Peter Som to find out. Upon arriving at his studio on West 26th Street Wednesday morning, it was nonstop action. Here’s a snippet of a day in the life of a designer pre-fashion week from too-big shoes to designer vices:

10:00: A mere 48 hours before his runway show. Som has a quick chat with stylist Havana Laffitte and casting director Noah Shelley about the run-of-show. While determining the order is not a science, it’s not exactly haphazard either.

10:10: A model tries to walk in sky-high Charlotte Olympia shoes. Som determines that foam tape is needed to make the tall platforms fit. (Note to self: Bring foam tape to next sample sale so we can snag all the left-over super cheap size 42's!)

10:20: Models arrive late because of the rain. Krystal Glynn, an Aussie with a classic, pale Nordic look, gets pegged as a girl-to-watch by Shelley.

10:45: The hair and makeup teams arrive. Once again, Som will be working with Estée Lauder’s Creative Makeup Director, Tom Pecheux, and Wella Professional’s Global Creative Director and hair expert, Eugene Souleiman. To go along with Som’s feminine rose-meets rock-n-roll theme, the team is looking for modern yet still womanly beauty looks. “It kind of has a morning after feel about it,” Som said. “It’s rough in a good way, if you know what I mean,” Souleiman said. (Yes, we do. The walk of shame in a cute outfit?)

11:15: Model Georgia Hilmer gets rosey pink extensions in her hair and Som continues to thoroughly inspect each fitting.

11:30: We try to get Som (who is also a creative consultant at Tommy Hilfiger) to spill about Hilfiger’s highly anticipated show on the High Line, but he stays mum.

11:45: Som discusses his vices. “I’m a total Nespresso addict. I’m also kind of obsessed with the Doughnut Plant. Today’s going to be a long day so we’re thinking about getting a batch later this evening.”

We think he deserves a doughnut. Whew.

  1. I love how it looks, though I have never personally tried it. Ironically I think I'm giving this away in my blog's giveaway in the trio lol.
