Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2012: Peplum Please

There’s no question as to why 2011 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist Cushnie et Ochs is a favorite amongst red carpet starlets like Jessica Alba, Rihanna, and Olivia Wilde. The label is known for its sexy body-con silhouettes, strategically suggestive cut-outs and supple leather pieces, and the upcoming Spring season definitely keeps up the heat.

The first look down the runway–a stark white and super cleavage-y strapless peplum dress–set the tone. The theme throughout the looks: dominatrix-esque leather cut-outs, criss-cross detailing and tons of peplum. The leather pieces are easily translated for Spring–our favorites included the black leather bustier dress with flared skirt, the reverse version with a stretch fabric bustier top with leather flared skirt, and a body-con peplum moto-vest. As the 90s silhouettes rang strong, we couldn’t help but think of the Thierry Mugler-directed and supermodel-populated 1992 George Michael “Too Funky” video, which also featured Mugler’s drop-dead sexy moto-inspired bodysuits.

The front row was packed with It-girl editors like Elle’s Kate Lanphear, Bazaar’s Joanna Hillman, Garage’s Shala Monroque and one It-girl DJ, Chelsea Leyland.

Leyland, who was being shadowed by an MTV camera crew filming her for an upcoming docu-series, told us last season’s navy silk dresses from the line were some of her favorites. But what does she wear to spin? “That’s a hard one,” the softspoken Leyland told us. “I’m always wearing massive heels and I’m not meant to. Most DJs always say to wear flat shoes or take a change of shoes. I’m really irresponsible because I always seem to wear like massive shoes and have a terrible backache the next day.”

We’d say at least half the people in the room are right there with you, Chelsea.
