Britney Spears Doted with VMA Tribute from "Jo Calderone"

After scoring Best Pop Video honors early in the show, Britney Spears returned to the stage to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (August 28).

The "Hold It Against Me Singer" was introduced by Lady Gaga's alter-ego, Jo Calderone, who called her an "inspiration" while telling the Nokia Theatre audience, "She taught us all how to be fearless, and the industry wouldn't be the same without her."

Talking to MTV after the show, Spears voiced her joy in the Video Vanguard Award presentation, as she said, "It was really crazy. I had no idea what to expect. The kids were amazing and so entertaining, and it was a really fun night. It was really cool. I was like, 'Wow, that's really sweet!'

The "29-year-old added, "I loved the little girl in the 'Slave' outfit. She was just so tiny and she delivered and she had such a great performance.... They were all so great, and you could tell they worked really hard."

Also mentioning Gaga's intro (which included an impromptu smooch, Britney gushed, "She was in full character! We just got onstage and we just kind of felt it out; we didn't know what was going on, so it was interesting!"
