California’s previous law banned the use of tanning beds for teens under the age of 14, but it was OK for 15 to 17-year-olds with a parent’s permission. Other states have varying laws regarding underage tanning, but the highest age limit that’s ever been imposed has been 16. </P><P>The AP reports that Illinois, Rhode Island, New York, and Ohio have considered similar laws, so you can expect that other states will start following suit. There’s evidence that the UV exposure you get using tanning beds can lead to malanoma (and rates are increasing in young women), so presumably that was the driving force behind the legislation. After age 18, you’re legal and responsible for your own stupid decisions (I have the tattoos to prove this logic), including whether or not you want to look like an extra from the Jersey Shore</EM>.</P><P>What’s even more eff’ed up here is that the Indoor Tanning Association is saying it will hurt their business, since five to ten percent of its customers are under 18. In her article she claims that if Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham have been given chances by the industry, then he should get the same consideration. As for his credentials? Sitting front row at shows for many years and doing collabs with Louis Vuitton and Hermés should be plenty of experience for launching your own RTW womenswear line. </P><P>She also sort of skewers Victoria Beckham, writing, “VB’s faux ‘I know I’m not really a designer but I’m learning’ humility, meanwhile, is an affront to the intelligence of all those whose job it is to comment on fashion.” (Kanye essentially said the same thing as VB, didn’t he? He just used the word “fuck” a lot more.) The difference is that Beckham’s collections have generally been well-received by critics since the beginning–everyone assumed she would fail, but she surprised everyone. She also started with a very small collection of dresses, shown in a quiet presentation format, and has grown from there, unlike Kanye, who pretty much announced that he was going to change the face of fashion. </P><P>The next point Frankel makes is that though his taste level was deemed questionable, so is Balmain’s. She thought the over-the-top presentation was entertaining, with shades of Tom Ford circa 1998.</P><P>We think the industry will give Kanye another chance. One more. But when stations didn’t snap up the property word came in that Frankel’s “aggressive Manhattan mien” didn’t resonate with execs and so what Page Six </EM>calls a “Henry Higgins-style mentor” to turn the straight-shooting star into a sweet, easy-going talk show host.</P><P>As always, an email to Telepictures was met with a response that they do not comment on projects in development, and Frankel’s team brushed off the item as factually inaccurate. Having spent several weeks of my young life interviewing people in the Skinnygirl orbit on the recipe of Frankel’s success, I’m inclined to agree. One after another, producers, assistants, former cast-mates and business partners agree: the secret ingredient of Brand Bethenny is that exact same in-your-face style.</P><P>“I give her every bit of credit for being the amazing personality she is,” said Bravo’s Andy Cohen, the producer behind Real Housewives</EM> and Bethenny Ever After.</EM> “She really lets it all hang out and that’s what her audience has fallen in love with.”</P><P>The question, then, is whether Bravo’s audience, which Cohen calls the most “educated and cultured” in all of cable, has the same taste as the network daytime talk show watching audience. Or as my esteemed editor Caroline Howard (whose dry sense of humor isn’t far from Frankel’s scathing wit) says, “maybe she’s great in a dynamic show that’s full of action, but when she’s sitting in a chair talking to you for an hour she’s not so appealing.”</P><P>No matter the case, the source who spoke to Page Six says the hired coach will be working with Frankel on her diction, including slowing down her speech and generally “being nicer.” Her recent appearances on the Ellen DeGeneres</EM> show are said to be a testing ground for her new behavior.</P><P>Or else they were simply another platform for Frankel’s motor mouth to keep up appearances—and brand recognition–between seasons of her own show. Frankel’s locked down a title on her fourth book, a novel, due in stores Summer 2012: Skinny Dipping.</EM> She writes:</P><P>It’s about a girl’s journey and what she wants, and trying to have it all. If it’s any indicator, the premiere of a Frankel-themed E! True Hollywood Story saw roughly half a million viewers in September–much less than the nearly three million who watched her 2010 wedding.</P><P>Still, the army of Bethenny fans is strong and wide-reaching. Her 725,000 Facebook followers are clamoring for more, more, more, begging recipes, childcare advice and workout tips from the self-styled guru. Here’s betting they all set their DVRs for the Long Island Eliza Doolittle’s daytime debut. The character she played was strong and taking control, which I unconsciously knew at that young age was a necessary quality for a woman. The show started with deep colored lace transparent dresses with black spaghetti strap slips and ended with the most elegant transformation of the trench coat seen on any runway. </P><P>But if there were any references to Argentina and its southern mythical plains so romanticized in literature, it was just the coming and going of the Spanish vocals on the soundtrack throughout the show, rather than any literal translation in the clothes. There was a sensuality in the opening series of lace dresses–green and rose florals and a blue embroidered large leaf pattern–that is rarely seen from Mr. Watanabe. His talents for innovative fabrics and renovating classical garments often leave human emotion out of his shows, but not this time. The feather headdresses by Kamo heightened the simple elegance of the textured work on the lace. </P><P>Midway through the show came a blue and red leather cropped bolero jacket with layered ruffle short sleeves and a navy trench, as the designer introduced elements of outerwear. The red and light purple lace dress with a black single-breasted trench was superb. So were the next series of coats: a cape coat, an open sleeve dress coat, and a sleeveless coat with attached cape sleeves. </P><P>If the rhythm of this emotional show on occasion seemed slightly repetitive, it may be intentional rather than haphazard. That is because the designer slowly introduced outerwear into the show, one piece at a time over the base layers of lace double dresses. That happened late on Saturday afternoon at the Comme des Garçons show, which was a much different show than the stunning collection presented by Junya Watanabe for his eponymous line earlier in the day. </P><P>“White drama” was the theme to this puzzling but absolutely beautiful and meditative show from Comme des Garçons where a model wearing a white duchess satin knee length dress with a puff skirt and a bow that seemed to tie her hands together (not to mention the large headdress) opened the procession. This led to an all-white collection that displayed not only incredible workmanship in tailoring and embroidery with sumptuous coats and short dresses, but a show that stirred varied emotional reactions from the audience. </P><P>Each outfit was so distinct from the previous one that the show felt like a slow evolution where a cut-out caged skirt worn with a lace long sleeve t-shirt morphed into a full flared cage coat. There were looks that seemed purposely like heavy stage costumes–like the hooded long dress with an opening for the model’s face. But then came two versions of slim fitted single-breasted jackets worn with a sheer lace dress and shorts respectively, each with molded sculpted hats created by 3 different artists: Gary Card, Kohei Nawa and Christian Astuguevieille (none of whom has ever made hat before). </P><P>What is one to make of all this? If staging the show at the Palais de la Femme is any indication, one would tend to think that the designer is lecturing about the conditions of women through a narrative of clothes done in calculated exaggerations. It may be a reflection of the conditions of women around the world played out in duchess satin outfits–from the bound hands of a bride in the opening to the fully covered heads that ended the show when the lights were suddenly turned off, leaving the audience bewildered in the darkened hall. </P><P>It could also have another meaning altogether. In Asia, white is the color for funerals and for mourning the dead. Perhaps in showing all these types of clothes that have constrained and bound women throughout history, the designer seemed to say that we have now arrived at a moment when we can mourn some of the loss of these constraints. That’s the sense I got from seeing this “white drama” played out. The show was also the antithesis of the fast fashion that’s omnipresent now. Here was meaning and emotion attached to fashion rather than just another minor and fleeting trend to be tweeted and retweeted. A Tweet from this show would be hollow without the prerequisite understanding and would be meaningless. </P><P>But never for a moment think that Comme de Garçons isn’t about business. The majority of these garments will be available in CDG’s stores in February since there isn’t a parallel commercial collection attached to the show pieces. The few difficult pieces like the floral hooded long dress with slit pockets may find room at the recently opened Trading Museum Comme des Garçons stores that sell limited editions, one of a kind garments, fragrances and accessories amidst displays of art collaborations. These were clothes for a lady of means, one who is maybe a little bored with her fancy life and who might be nasty to her waiter. She keeps her hair in a tight, low bun, cradled by a gold clip, and never lets her hair down. Rod Blagojevich.</P><P>Those chosen for the jury will eventually have to decide whether the government has proven school teacher-turned-mega millionaire William Cellini conspired to shake down the Oscar-winning producer of "Million Dollar Baby" for a $1.5 million campaign contribution to the Democratic governor.</P><P>The slight, gray-haired Cellini, 76, is a lifelong Republican known in his heyday as The King of Clout and the pope of Illinois politics because of his knack for quietly cozying up to those in power.</P><P>He listened intently as jury selection started Monday with questions from the presiding judge. Cellini jotted down notes and occasionally leaned over to speak with his lead attorney, former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb. When Webb introduced his client to the several dozen potential jurors as the proceedings began, Cellini stood and bowed slightly in their direction.</P><P>The enigmatic Cellini has shunned the spotlight since his indictment in 2008, and he didn't speak to reporters as he entered the Chicago courthouse Monday. But he appeared at-ease - his hands in his pockets, smiling and joking with relatives sitting on a spectators' bench just before his trial began.</P><P>U.S. District Judge James Zagel questioned just eight jurors Monday, asking several if they had ever heard of Cellini or the allegations against him. The U.S. postal employee was among those who said he had heard something of the case but could be evenhanded. None of the eight said they could recall any details.</P><P>Among the others questioned Monday was an avid reader of Oprah magazine, a former 911 dispatcher in the Chicago area and a clerk at a state court who aspires to become a paralegal or sheriff's deputy.</P><P>The approximately 30-year-old woman who follows Perez Hilton on Twitter wrote on her questionnaire that, "There doesn't seem to be much accountability about spending (political campaign) money."</P><P>But she also assured the judge she could fairly assess the evidence in Cellini's case.</P><P>The substitute teacher began to tear up as she told Zagel that a printing company her husband has worked at for 18 years recently slashed his salary in half.</P><P>"This was a shock . . . utterly unexpected," said the woman, who appeared to be around 40.</P><P>The judge told jurors the trial, which is being held in the same Chicago courtroom where Blagojevich was recently convicted of trying to sell or trade President Barack Obama's old Senate seat, was likely to last three to five weeks.</P><P>After just an hour, Zagel adjourned until Tuesday morning, saying he had matters in another case to attend to. Jury selection was expected to take all day Tuesday, with attorneys delivering opening statements later in the week.</P><P>Cellini, who is free on $1 million bond, has pleaded not guilty to attempted extortion, solicitation of a bribe and other charges. If convicted, he faces the prospect of several years in prison.</P><P>Blagojevich was convicted at retrial earlier this year. His two trials revealed the ex-governor as charismatic but lacking discipline. He seemed to bumble his way through his job and now, at 54, is broke and about to be sentenced to prison.</P><P>State contacts helped Cellini earn tens of millions from real estate, casino and even asphalt businesses, and he has held on to much of his wealth. The son of a policeman, Cellini has a reputation as savvy and meticulous and a man not to be crossed.</P><P>Prosecutors planned to tell jurors how Cellini forged ties with top-tier politicians as far back as the 1960s. Last season’s mini-showings have blossomed into a full runway show this time. Three weeks ago the company opened a flagship store in the Aoyama Minato-ku shopping district of Tokyo about a block down from the Prada mega building. And Sacai menswear is emerging from its underground cult status and has been presented in Paris during the men’s shows. </P><P>While Ms. Abe’s signature and innovative work with knits remained the foundation for today’s collection–shown at the back of the Hotel d’Evreux near place Vendome–the spring clothes indicate an evolution in her masterful recombinant techniques marrying one element of a garment to another. This spring collection continued to feature her skilled combinations of different types of fabrics onto one garment and her ability to alter the forms of skirts, dresses, or cardigans–or mixing elements of each–to arrive at a new garment like a dress with a ribbed cotton front. </P><P>However, this season Ms. Abe also rendered the collection more feminine with billowing shapes and sexy broderie anglaises with white cotton eyelet trench coats that revealed the skirt underneath. A navy ribbed short sleeve sweater with cotton short collar and flare back dress, a white cotton shirt with a cowl neck knit cardigan sewn on top, and an attached white cotton pleated poplin micro-skirt were her signature all-in-one outfits. </P><P>One of the best looks was a navy cardigan with an attached folded khaki skirt back and a navy knit skirt with a white cotton tutu. A simple long navy short sleeve knit dress with embroidered shirt collar and an open back with an attached flared khaki skirt were also standouts. This description doesn’t adequately protray the simplicity of construction and the beauty of this look on the runway as the model turned around to reveal the backside. I loved the white double-breasted coat and white satin/ yellow lace dress combination. </P><P>It’s clear that Sacai’s customers adore that attention to small detail in each of the garments; either they are a hybrid top or an all-in-one variety garment. There’s a great deal of workmanship involved in many of her creations. You almost have to appreciate this kind of workmanship to really appreciate the clothes. "We want to say we accept the decision but we are also looking at how a decision so certain a few years ago should be overturned. Rudy Guede's appeal was upheld by the court and the court agreed he wasn't acting alone. So, if those two aren't guilty, who are the others? It could have something to do with the fact that Chanel only recently turned 20, leaving her teen years behind her and making the whole affair only slightly less creepy.</P><P>Whatever the case, Kanye obviously admires Chanel at least in the professional sense, as he tapped her to close his debut fashion show. And it would make sense that the two would hang out during the rest of Paris fashion week for promotional, rather than romantic, purposes–especially since Chanel was sporting one of West’s designs.
